Last updated: Sep 22, 2026

1. Who we are

WillPower Alliance ("we", "us", "our") is the organisation behind the WillPower event and campaign, raising awareness of Power of Attorney and deputyship abuse in England and Wales.

Data controller: Matthew Breakwell Contact address: 30 Engate Street, London SE13 7HA Contact email: matt@willpoweralliance.co.uk ICO registration number: [insert once ICO registration is complete]

This policy explains how we collect, use, and protect personal data when you visit willpoweralliance.co.uk, register for or attend a WillPower event, contact us, or sign up to hear from us.

WillPower Alliance is a separate organisation from Matt's independent fiduciary practice (willpowerservices.co.uk). If you engage with that practice directly, a separate privacy policy applies there.

  1. What data we collect

Depending on how you interact with the site, we may collect:

•       Contact details - name, email address, phone number, organisation (where you submit these via a contact or registration form)

•       Event registration data - name, email, dietary or access requirements, session/breakout preferences, professional role or affiliation (where relevant to speaker/attendee matching)

•       Correspondence - anything you send us by email, contact form, or in person at an event

•       Technical data - IP address, browser type, device information, and pages visited, collected automatically via our hosting provider and any analytics we use

•       Cookie data - see Section 7

We do not knowingly collect sensitive personal data (such as health information) through the website itself. If you disclose details of a personal situation involving Power of Attorney abuse - for example in a message to us - we treat that information as confidential and handle it with particular care (see Section 5).

3. How we use your data

We use personal data to:

•       Process event registrations and manage attendance, including breakout sessions and speaker logistics

•       Respond to enquiries sent via the contact page

•       Send updates about WillPower events, the campaign, and related news, where you have opted in

•       Understand how the website is used, to improve its content and functionality

•       Meet legal, safeguarding, and regulatory obligations

We do not use your data to provide legal, financial, or other advice, and submitting a form does not create an advisory relationship.

4. Legal basis for processing

Under UK GDPR, we rely on:

•       Consent - for newsletter/marketing communications, which you can withdraw at any time

•       Legitimate interests - for responding to enquiries, running events, and improving the website, where this does not override your rights and freedoms

•       Contract - where processing is necessary to deliver something you have requested, such as event registration

•       Legal obligation - where we are required to retain or disclose data by law

5. Sharing your data

We do not sell personal data. We may share limited data with:

•       Service providers who help us run the website and events, such as our hosting/publishing platform (Send.co) and email or event-management tools, under data processing terms

•       The BBC, where an event is held at BBC premises or co-promoted with BBC contributors, and only to the extent necessary for event delivery (for example, venue access lists)

•       Speakers, partner organisations, or professional advisers named in connection with a specific breakout session you register for, where relevant to that session

•       Regulators or authorities, where required by law or to protect someone's safety

Anything shared with third parties is limited to what is necessary for the stated purpose. We do not pass your details to third parties for their own marketing.

6. International transfers

Our service providers may process data outside the UK. Where this happens, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place (such as the UK's international data transfer addendum or an adequacy decision).

7. Cookies

The website may use cookies or similar technologies to:

•       Enable core site functionality (essential cookies)

•       Measure site usage anonymously (analytics cookies, where used)

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Disabling non-essential cookies will not affect your ability to use the core site.

8. Data retention

We keep personal data only as long as necessary for the purpose it was collected:

•       Event registration data is generally retained for the duration of the event cycle plus a reasonable follow-up period, then deleted or anonymised

•       Newsletter sign-up data is retained until you unsubscribe

•       Enquiry correspondence is retained for as long as needed to resolve the matter and for a reasonable period afterwards for record-keeping

9. Your rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:

•       Access the personal data we hold about you

•       Have inaccurate data corrected

•       Request deletion of your data, in certain circumstances

•       Object to or restrict certain processing

•       Withdraw consent at any time (for marketing communications)

•       Data portability, where applicable

•       Complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) - ico.org.uk

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at matt@willpoweralliance.co.uk.

10. Children

WillPower events and this website are aimed at adults. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

11. Security

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal data against unauthorised access, loss, or misuse. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time, for example as our events, tools, or regulatory registrations change. The "Last updated" date at the top will reflect the most recent revision.
